Adrienne Baker Presents The Grieving Place at Curious Matter
Adrienne Baker
JERSEY CITY — Curious Matter, the downtown exhibition and project space, will host a special performance by flutist and interdisciplinary artist Adrienne Baker on Sunday, October 26, at 4 p.m.
Baker will present her solo project, The Grieving Place, an immersive sound installation dedicated to creating space for healing and catharsis through music. The work weaves together flute, original compositions, and narrative elements to explore grief, memory, and human connection.
“We are socialized to hear certain sounds, certain musics, and ascribe quality and narrative to these sounds,” Baker explains. “I push the boundaries of these expectations to craft a sound installation that captures the complexity of human emotion.”
The Grieving Place positions music as a vehicle for both personal and collective transformation, offering audiences an opportunity to reflect on loss while fostering empathy and understanding. Donations collected at the performance will support the continuation of this project.
Baker, who received a 2025 Fellowship Award from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts, is known for her multifaceted practice as a performer, composer, and collaborator. Her work spans classical performance, chamber ensemble projects, and original installations that blur the line between sound art and storytelling.
